CeraVe, a cult skincare brand, has recently been launched in the UK. I was elated to hear the news as I have come across many wonderful reviews and wanted to try the range out.
I have learned about CeraVe skincare around a year ago when I was doing my research for an effective anti-ageing skincare routine. With a pharmaceutical background, I’d like to read around/investigate and look for evident based ingredients. And CeraVe ticks all of the requirements I was searching for.
Why CeraVe
Developed by dermatologists, CeraVe was launched on 2006. CeraVe’s hallmark ingredient is ceramides. All CeraVe products are enriched with a blend of three essential ceramides (ceramides 1, 3, and 6-II), fatty acids, and other lipids to help repair and strengthen the skin’s natural barrier.
CeraVe uses a delivery system called MultiVesicular Emulsion Technology (MVE), which releases moisturizing ingredients over the course of 24 hours, layer by layer, to help keep skin soft all day.
All products are fragrance-free and non-comedogenic.
Why Ceramides
Ceramides make up 50% of the skin barrier
Ceramides are lipids (oils) found naturally in the top layer of our skin and are essential in supporting the skin barrier and retaining moisture. Without ceramides, skin can become dry, itchy, or irritated.
When ceramide levels are low, the skin barrier is weakened, allowing moisture to escape from skin. Therefore applying ceramides directly to skin would help to restore its barrier and retain moisture. And there are many reasons why ceramide levels could be depleting, a natural ageing process or individuals with tendency of dry skin or certain skin conditions such as eczema.
Hydrating Cleanser
This cleanser has gel-cream texture and doesn’t foam at all, it’s almost like you’re using a lightweight cream to cleanse. I tend to use the cleanser in the morning and it does a good job to wash away all the dirt, excess oil and sebum that have accumulated over night. It doesn’t feel oily nor leaving any weird film behind.
I have oily skin so the word hydrating got me a little worried but I’m glad to say that it doesn’t make my skin feel any oiler nor uncomfortable. The cleanser also contains hyaluronic acid to hydrate and nourish the skin. My skin doesn’t feel stripped after.
I like using the cleanser the night after I have used a peel or some sort of acids. The cleanser feels “neutral” so that I don’t irritate my skin further.
If you normally gravitate towards non-fragrance cleansers, this is your friend. I feel that this cleanser can be used by all skin types, including sensitive skin.
One bottle of 150ml will last you a long time as you only need one or two pumps per cleanse.
Foaming cleanser
This is a beautiful, non-stripping and non-drying cleanser. It has a gel texture and lathers up well. Again it has no fragrance and feel very “neutral” yet effective. I’d like to use this cleanser as my second cleanse at night. It helps to remove any makeup residue that my first cleanse might have missed. I love that the cleanser doesn’t leave any film or sticky feel. Also, you won’t get the squeaky clean feeling that you sometimes get with some foam cleansers.
The cleanser also contains a host of gorgeous actives such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamie, glycerin and cholesterol.
The surfactant in the cleanser is Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate which is totally different from Sodium Lauryl Sulphate. Good to know if you normally try to avoid foaming cleanser because of Sodium Lauryl Sulphate.
Moisturising Lotion
This lotion has a velvety feel and lightweight gel-cream texture. It absorbs quickly and doesn’t feel greasy. The lotion also contains hyaluronic acid to help retain moisture. This could be used as a moisturiser for your face or body. It feels lightweight on my face, perfect for the current hot and humid weather.
The lotion is not moisturising enough for my extremely dry legs. The lotion sinks in and fills the “cracks” well. I do need to apply very liberally and often. I’m intending to carry on with frequent applications.
This lotion can be used on children (3 and above) which is great as I can use it on my two girls.
Facial Moisturising Lotion
This lotion has a lovely gel like texture that melts immediately as you spread it out. It absorbs quickly without feeling oily nor heavy. It gives my skin a lovely healthy glow.
Along with the essential ceramides, like other products in the rang the lotion also contains niacinamide and hyaluronic acid to hydrate and brighten.
I love that I can use it on my kids too. It’s packaged in a nice portable tube with a pump making it a great one to have in my handbag.
Summary
After trying these CeraVe products, I feel very confident in recommending them. They protect, replenishing the skin barrier while cleansing or hydrating at the same time. The range is suited for any skin types including sensitive skin. I certainly value these in my skincare arsenal and will reach for them when I might have overexposed my skin with acids or retinols.
